Job Title: Senior Engineer - Wind Energy

Research Organization: The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) 

Location: North Cape, Prince Edward Island, Canada 

About WEICan:

The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) is a non-profit organization founded in 1981, dedicated to advancing wind energy across Canada through research, testing, innovation, and collaboration. Located on Canada's east coast in North Cape, our institute benefits from an ideal wind research setting, with extensive water exposure, typical wind speeds of 8.9 m/s at 80 m, and frequent icing occurrences annually. 

Our state-of-the-art laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including a 10 MW Wind R&D Park, 223 kWh of energy storage, 109 kW of bifacial and monofacial PV, meteorological towers, and a small wind test bed. This infrastructure allows us to accumulate a wealth of data and nurture a team of experts, enabling us to provide practical opportunities for government agencies, private/public sector businesses, and academic institutions to explore, demonstrate, test, and validate wind energy technologies and concepts. 

Job Description:

At WEICan, our primary focus is on researching, developing, and demonstrating renewable energy technologies. To support our mission, we seek talented Senior-Level Engineers passionate about joining a purpose-driven organization dedicated to wind energy research. 

Responsibilities:      

  • Conduct research, development, and demonstration of renewable energy technologies, with a particular emphasis on wind energy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and manage wind energy projects.
  • Lead and supervise teams, ensuring effective project coordination and efficient utilization of resources.
  • Apply expertise in wind systems, electrical systems, instrumentation design, and data acquisition systems.
  • Analyze data and employ modeling techniques to evaluate the performance and reliability of wind energy systems.
  • Manage utility-scale energy-related projects, encompassing planning, implementation, and quality assurance.
  • Possess knowledge of vibration analysis techniques and industrial control technologies.
  • Utilize programming skills to support engineering research and optimize wind energy systems.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant industry standards, including CSA, CEC, and the IEC wind turbine standards.
  • Employ data analysis tools and computer systems, including MS Office and CAD software packages.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, fostering effective collaboration with stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering discipline or a related field.
  • Proven experience in wind energy systems, electrical engineering, or a relevant energy-related field.
  • Proficiency in managing teams and coordinating complex projects.
  • Familiarity with electrical/mechanical instrumentation design and implementation.
  • Strong research background with experience in engineering research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of utility-scale energy-related project development and planning.
  • Expertise in data analysis, modeling techniques, and vibration analysis.
  • Familiarity with industrial control technologies and their application in wind energy systems.
  • Experience working with utilities is advantageous.
  • Competency in programming and working with instrumentation, digital control systems, and data acquisition systems.
  • Proficient in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Familiarity with CSA, CEC, and the IEC wind turbine standards.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including MS Office and CAD software packages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

Additional Details:

  • WEICan is located in North Cape, Prince Edward Island. The role may involve fieldwork, including climbing wind turbines and meteorological towers.
  • Some intermittent travel may be required.
  • Candidates must possess a Canadian driver's license, and the ability to hold a Canadian passport is preferred.
