WEICan was delighted to welcome Dr. Kristen Schell for two months this summer as part of our Visiting Professional Program.

Dr. Schell is an Associate Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Canada Research Chair in Net-Zero Energy Modelling at Carleton University in Ottawa. Her research focuses on developing physics-informed deep learning models to improve wind power forecasting. During her time at WEICan, Dr. Schell explored different aspects of PEI’s energy sector and connected with organizations working on the challenges and opportunities facing our electricity system.

Some highlights from her visit included:

  • Connecting with Summerside Electric to learn about their grid forecasting needs and how improved forecasting can support renewable energy integration.
  • Sharing her expertise with the WEICan team through a lunch-and-learn session, sparking discussion and an exchange of ideas around energy modelling and forecasting.
  • Speaking with the Rotary Club of Summerside, sharing her knowledge and perspectives with the broader community.
  • Getting uptower! Dr. Schell climbed one of WEICan’s wind turbines and experienced our research facilities from a whole new perspective.

Beyond the research and technical work, the Visiting Professional Program also provided Dr. Schell with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to operate a wind farm day to day and plan strategically for its long-term performance. Reflecting on her time at WEICan, Dr. Schell said:

“During my time at WEICan, I got a detailed understanding of the daily challenges of operating a wind farm, as well as the long-term, strategic planning required to maintain its productivity. I am extremely impressed by both their scientific and operations teams. WEICan is truly a globally unique organization. I am looking forward to our continued collaborations.”

We’re grateful to Dr. Schell for sharing her time, expertise, and enthusiasm with our team and the broader PEI energy community. Programs like the Visiting Professional Program provide a valuable opportunity to connect expertise with real-world challenges, share knowledge, and strengthen relationships across Canada’s energy sector. We look forward to building on the connections and collaborations developed during her time with us.
