WEICan’s battery energy storage system (BESS) test bed currently houses a 111.5 kW/223 kWh BESS from Tesla Energy. Our BESS serves as a valuable source of operational data for research purposes.

From 2014 to 2017, WEICan operated a BESS that comprised GE’s 2 MWh Durathon Na-NiCl2 battery interfaced by S&C’s 1 MW Purewave Inverter. The BESS was used for a variety of research, mostly in month-long use-case scenarios to understand the technical and economic implications of a utility-scale storage system in supporting integration of renewable energy into the electrical grid. This work was ground-breaking in the field and helped WEICan develop an international reputation for innovation in renewable energy grid integration. After two years of use, the Durathon battery degraded to an unusable level and was decommissioned.
