Abstract

As renewable energy penetration increases, it becomes more important to site new projects with the provision of reliable power in mind. This requires additional site screening indicators beyond a capacity factor. A series of site pre-screening indicators are proposed to represent average conditions, variance within typical conditions, and extreme periods of low production. Indicators were selected primarily due to their strong theoretical relationship with energy storage provision. The indicators are illustrated for a site in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The indicators are illustrated for a site in Prince Edward Island, Canada, computed using wind and solar data that are available prior to any significant infrastructure investment. They are then compared to the same indicators computed using real operational data from a renewable energy R&D park at that location.
