Wind Energy Institute of Canada issues Expression of Interest for supply of an Energy Storage System for their “Wind Energy R&D Park and Storage System for Innovation in Grid Integration” Project
June 9th, 2011
The Wind Energy Institute of Canada is constructing a 10 MW Wind R&D Park in North Cape, Prince Edward Island, Canada. This wind plant will be installed and operated with a utility sized energy storage system and related controls, designed and built to investigate the economic and technical viability of using energy storage technology with wind power plants in a Canadian application. With the selection and order of the wind turbines complete, the Institute will now focus on the selection of the most appropriate energy storage technology. The purpose of this Expression of Interest is to receive technical and costing information that will be the basis for selecting a short list of energy storage manufacturers that will be engaged in detailed negotiations for the supply and support of the Energy Storage System to the Wind Energy Institute of Canada.
The Government of Canada is supporting the Wind Energy Research and Development Park and Storage System project with a $12M grant through the five-year Clean Energy Fund announced in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Government of PEI is providing the Institute a $12.6M loan which will be repaid from the sale of power produced by the new infrastructure. With a focus on research, the project will add to Canada’s understanding of the production, operation, storage and installation of small and large wind energy technologies.
To receive a copy of the Expression of Interest document please contact Ken Montgomery, Director of Technology, by emailing Ken.montgomery@weican.ca. The closing date for receipt of response is July 13, 2011.
