WEICan and Raum Energy Sign Second Contract for “Testing Leading to Certification” for the Raum 3.5kW Wind Turbine

January 27, 2010

WEICan and Raum Energy are pleased to announce their continued collaboration with the contract signing for WEICan to test Raum's 3.5 kW horizontal axis wind turbine. The 3.5 kW wind turbine will be delivered to WEICan's North Cape site for installation in April 2010. WEICan will conduct tests for power performance, duration, safety and acoustics emissions in accordance with “IEC 61400-2: Design Requirements for Small Wind Turbines” and “American Wind Energy Association: Small Wind Turbine Performance and Safety Standard”. It is Raum's intention to use the test results in an application to the Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC) for certification of the turbine.

Raum Energy Inc. is a Saskatchewan-based wind energy company focused on developing and manufacturing highly robust and reliable wind turbines and grid-tie inverters. Their goal is to provide a complete wind energy system - turbine, grid-tie inverter and tower. By developing systems that bring clean, free wind energy to consumers at a low cost, Raum contributes to energy generation without excessive impact on the environment. Raum also manufactures a 1.5kW wind turbine system that has been installed at WEICan and is currently undergoing power performance testing. The operational experience gained from the 1.5 kW has fed into the ongoing development of Raum's wind turbine systems.

Since 1981 the Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) has been Canada's national facility for the testing of wind turbines. In March 2006 with a capital investment of $3.5M from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), WEICan has expanded its client base and broadened its mandate to focus on four strategic areas:

  1. Testing Leading to Certification;
  2. Research, Development, and Demonstration;
  3. Training, Outreach, and Public Education; and
  4. Technical Consultation, and Assistance.

WEICan has been working with the small wind turbine community to develop and implement testing protocols that will assist the industry develop its sales to the general public. To this end it has adopted rigorous testing protocols in accordance with international standards. With its existing range of small wind turbines, WEICan can provide a proof-of-concept test bed for new technologies and develop a testing program to validate the technology's viability.

WEICan and Raum look forward to working together on this project, further information will be updated as the wind turbine is installed.
