WEICan begins Second “Testing Leading to Certification” program with Cleanfield Energy
18 December 2008
The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan), Canada’s leading wind energy research and testing facility, is pleased to announce that the Cleanfied Energy V3.5 is the second wind turbine erected of those participating in WEICan’s testing leading to certification program. “We are pleased to have the Cleanfield V3.5 installed at WEICan and look forward to continued progress with Type Testing services for small wind turbines”, said Scott Harper, CEO of WEICan. The testing program exists to assist small wind turbine manufacturers certify their turbines under the Small Wind Certification Council (SWCC) and other certifying bodies.
Cleanfield Energy Corp ("Cleanfield") a subsidiary of Cleanfield Alternative Energy Inc. (TSX VENTURE:AIR) have completed contract negotiations with WEICan for testing of their V3.5, a 3.5 kW vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). The turbine has arrived at WEICan, to be installed in December, 2008. “We are delighted to have the Cleanfield Energy V3.5 wind turbine installed and operating at the WEICan test facility. The independent third party testing being carried out by WEICan will be a tremendous opportunity to verify the V3.5's performance and efficiency. This will go a long way to demonstrating the viability of the turbine", said Cleanfield Energy President, Tony Verrelli.
In 2007 WEICan announced it had allocated $250,000 for Type Testing of small wind turbines and requested proposals from companies that would be interested in participating. Upon completion of the review of applications it was decided to proceed with a detailed testing program with 5 of the original nine applicants. The turbines to be tested range in output capacities from 1.3kW to 66kW. Tests will be performed to IEC 61400 standard. Specific test include; power performance, power quality (optional), acoustic noise emissions, duration and safety.
