24 September 2008

On September 17, 2008 WESNet held a meeting of its Scientific Committee at the Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) in North Cape, PEI. Liuchen Chang, Principal Investigator of WESNet had this to say; “WESNet is looking forward to working with WEICan, this world class laboratory with experienced personal will be invaluable towards achieving goals in our four theme areas. UNB has been collaborating with WEICan since 1995 and one of the goals of WESNet will be to have more universities capitalize on this synergy.”

WEICan, a non-profit company and Canada’s wind energy testing and research institute, has announced its concrete support for Canada’s first nation-wide wind energy research team. WEICan has committed to providing financial and intellectual support to WESNet up to a total of $150,000 over five years and agreed to contribute $30,000 of in-kind support per year as well. WEICan CEO Scott Harper stated that; “The creation of WESNet provides a tremendous opportunity for our Institute to further expand our efforts with academia all across the country. WEICan is pleased to support the efforts of WESNet and host the Scientific Committee for this meeting.”

The goal of WESNet is to find innovative solutions to technical problems facing the wind industry and, in so doing, to assist Canada in gaining international status as a wind energy centre of excellence.

With total financing of $5mn over 5 years, WESNet is poised to play a leading role in nationwide academic wind energy research. WESNet brings together 16 Canadian universities, federal and provincial agencies as well as partners from the private sector. WESNet activities are divided into four themes:

  1. Wind Resource Assessment
  2. Wind Energy Extraction
  3. Power Engineering
  4. Wind Energy Integration.
