Structure

Heritage

For more than 25 years WEICan has been at the forefront of Canada's wind research program. WEICan, which until 2006 was known as the Atlantic Wind Test Site (AWTS), is situated in North Cape, Prince Edward Island (PEI) an area with an outstanding wind resource.

The technical demands made of the wind industry by developers, grid owners and operators as well as electricity regulators, have become substantially greater in the last few years. We at WEICan are committed to ensuring that we assist industry in meeting those demands.

As a result in 2005 we secured from our principal funders (Natural Resources Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the PEI Energy Corporation) several million dollars in long and short term financial commitments to undertake the strategic investments required to better serve industry.

As we move forward we will continue to work in close collaboration with our many partners including universities, colleges and other research institutions, private sector companies, governments and utilities. In doing so we will continue to lead the integration of wind energy across Canada by means of testing and certification as well as research, development, innovation and collaboration.

Board of Directors

Board members are selected from various regions around Canada and overseas in order to ensure that WEICan strategy development benefits from a powerful combination of national oversight and international expertise. Both of these aspects are crucially important to WEICan's development and will receive increasing emphasis as we move forward.

The Board includes representation from the energy industry, academia and from our major funding partners: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the PEI Energy Corporation. A list of the existing Directors is available here.

Board Directors are elected for one or two year terms and may not serve more than three consecutive two-year terms.

Technical Advisory Committee

WEICan is creating a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) which will provide technical advice to support our Director of Technology and our general activities. The TAC will consist primarily of engineers and researchers from industry, research institutions, universities/colleges, and government.

If you are interested in being a part of the TAC please feel free to contact us.

Core Funding

Operational funding is provided federally through NRCan and provincially through the PEI Energy Corporation. Additional funds will be collected through collaborative arrangements.
